Boat Tubes FAQs
What is Tubing Behind a Boat Called?
Often simply referred to as 'tubing' or 'biscuiting'. There are other slang terms in different areas of the country, but these are the most popular over time.
What Kind of Tube is Best?
This will depend on what type of tubing you want to do. If you want to go for speed and jump wakes, then smaller 1-2-person towables will be best. If you want to enjoy fun with more friends then a 3-5 person model would be better. These may be circular or 'sit-back' style tubes.
If you want to get a large amount of people on board, then a banana boat tube would be our recommendation. These are available from 3-person to 14-person models with several sizes in between. They have been popular since the early 1990s.
How Fast Does a Tube Go Behind a Boat?
Your speed will be directly proportionate to the speed of the boat, as long as the boat is going straight. When turning, the tube will whip around at speeds faster than what the vessel is traveling.
Most towables are recommended to be operated at speeds of 15-25 mph. Pulling at fast speeds can lead to serious injuries; concussions and whiplash are the most common, but rare when operated at recommended speeds.
Is Tubing Behind a Boat Safe?
As long as safety precautions are followed, this is normally a safe activity. Passengers must always wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) at all times, no matter their age. Avoiding excessive speeds is the next most important safety measure, followed by not overloading.
How Many Tubes Can a Boat Tow?
You can tow 2-3 towables behind a boat, but it isn't recommended. They can collide and this is when injuries can happen. We recommend only towing 1 tube behind recreational boats.
How Far Should a Tube Be Behind a Boat?
It is recommended that you are a minimum of 100 feet behind the vessel. You want enough distance to avoid colliding if you are thrown off or if the boat slows down as you are coming off your top tubing speed.
Can You Tube Behind a Boat at Night?
That is a hard NO! Boating at night can be dangerous enough, tubing at night is very dangerous and most likely illegal. We are located at Lake of the Ozarks, Mo, and on our lake there is no skiing, tubing, or PWC use 30 minutes after sunset until 1 hour before sunrise.
